Alden Tech & Design has moved from the corner of Perkins and Oak. But no worries, we are still here and expanding and easy to reach and meet. Finn's programming, fixing etc. will be done primarily working out of our new home office.
Alden Tech & Design also has a Facebook page where we publish information about what we think is important for our computer customers.

New Rates
In 2010 we held off on raising our rates due to the state of the general economy. However, after much consideration, we are announcing a slight increase in our basic rates for 2011: $80/hr. for work that is done in the office and $90 when going out of office.
For new customers the rates will be in effect from January 1st, 2011 and for our current customers the new rates will begin Feb.1st, 2011.
Standing business contract terms will apply until contract renewal.
Reinstall, Replace or Reuse Your Computer
For all of my customers that have old or slow computers we offer a FREE evaluation. Read more on our website.
Information For my customers
Alden Tech and Design utilizes four different ways of sharing information.
Our website: www.aldentd.com contains information about our services and links to web sites with important information.
Blog for longer articles or more in depth information.
Facebook is used for smaller notices and links to web sites with important information.
Email Newsletter (sign up on front page) is being sent out 3-4 times a year.
Security NEWS
There have been a lot of articles the last months about security and how phishing attempts have been exploding. The good news is that they have arrested the people behind Zeus (trojan horse) and they hope to get it removed from the internet. It turned out that they were able to track down the people using by following the money stream.
Adobe Reader X and Adobe X was launched over a week ago promising to increase the security.
Microsoft is sending out security fixes/updates on Tuesday that will close 46 security problems. They will close all holes that the Stuxnet worm was using.

Monitoring and Error Reporting
Last month I started using a new remote monitoring system for computers. A monitoring system will send information from a computer to a central database reporting on the health of that computer. The monitoring system can be installed for one pc or for a whole network.
A convenient feature of this monitoring system is the email reporting function. If you have a problem with your computer your email to help@ my domain will automatically show up on my screen alerting me to the problem immediately.
PC Maintenance
This last month has been very busy for Alden Tech & Design. There have been quite a few questions from customers on how to maintain computers and how to prevent malware from taking over their pcs. Therefore, this newsletter will focus mainly on that topic, and what is better than to get a list of what a computer professional is doing for his own computer?
Of course I am sticking my head out with this list as most computer professionals have their own list. But my list is working for me and that counts!! :-)
You will find my suggestions in the ATD blog on this address: http://www.aldentd.com/content/maintaining-your-windows-computer.
Avoiding Malware
Another question that has come up from a couple of my customers is how to avoid malware. There are some guidelines, but there are no final solutions unless you find yourself at the point of no return and throw your computer out of the house for good. Some suggestions that I have are listed here http://www.aldentd.com/content/avoiding-malware.
Our new office
We have now been in our new office for more than two months and I have to say that I like it. It is spacious, still offers a central downtown location and there are normally more parking places available than on School Street. We have received a lot of compliments about our office from our customers and it is appropriate to thank my partner and wife, Wynd, for most of that.
Storage needs?
I found this article on the internet about a DIY server for storing 67TB (67,000 GB ) of data. I personally will never need this much storage unless I start editing films professionally, but the price is very low for this much storage. http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/

MOVING!
Alden Tech & Design will be MOVING FEBRUARY 15, 2010 to a new downtown location "just around the corner".
New Location:
- Alden Tech & Design
- 216 W. Perkins St. #105
- (private entrance on N. Oak St.)
Our new office (blue building on the corner of Perkins and N. Oak St.) has it's own separate entrance on N. Oak St. which should make it very convenient for our customers. Hopefully, you will find that the parking in this location is just a slight bit easier than on School Street. (turn right on Oak from Perkins and look for a place to park....our entrance is on the Northwest end of the building where the blue awning is. Just look for our sign!).
Welcome to our first newsletter, new web pages, new blog and an online store in our near future.
Stop by our new location at 216 W. Perkins St. #105 (entrance on N. Oak St.) after the 15th. Join us for a new art showing at the March 5th First Fridays Artwalk Ukiah.
Walk ins welcome!
Blog
Our new blog will cover computer and web design news and what is happening at Alden Tech & Design. You can find our blog at this address: http://www.aldentd.com/blog. On the page you will see an orange sign. Clicking on it will set up automatic download of new blog postings to your news reader (RSS feed). This way the small articles will automatically come in to your inbox.
Newsletter
Our newsletter is a bigger body of text and I don't want to push that on you unless you really want to receive it. It will only be used for information about moving, new services or products and more in-depth articles about services and products that we offer. You can always unsubscribe from it if you don't want it.
Click here to sign up for our newsletter. Scroll down and look for the newsletter on the left side in the menu. Fill in your email and click on save. You need to confirm that you want the newsletter. Check your email and click on the link.
